Reclaim Your Students' Patience (and Time): The Magic of Configured Workday Dashboards
2 min read
I recently saw this article entitled, "Workday is Bland, Basic, and Unappealing":Â https://lnkd.in/g9PXKEYX
The article was written by a student sharing their experience trying to register. The student is an entertaining writer whose article is a must read. One of my favorite parts is where he describes his experience registering:Â
"I’m led to a 13-step process of completing my planned schedule for the next semester. Five steps later and I have finally found course listings. After another seven steps, I should have my schedule for the next semester. Now I’m no expert, but a process once taking max three steps now taking 13 is absurd."

Rethinking Workday Delivered Dashboards
Unfortunately this experience is all too common. I think institutions often believe it's best to use the Workday-delivered dashboards, hubs, and reports which cause many unnecessary clicks. I think institutions are trying to get away from the dreaded "customization" they did in their prior system that made them drown in work. The thing is that Workday is configurable, not customizable. Here's the kind of set-up we've helped institutions configure (no coding required) for a intuitive user experience:
Step 1) Student clicks on the Menu
Step 2) They go to a Custom Dashboard (not the Hub)
Step 3) They click on a custom report (filtered to the level and academic period for which the student is registering)
Step 4) Student immediately can register for a course or add to their saved schedule.
Some other highlights of the custom dashboards and reports:
Student sees bulletins that provide custom information targeted to their program of study
Images break up the dashboard
Students don't go to their profile in the top right-hand corner. Instead everything can be in the custom dashboard. People read from top to bottom, left to right. Navigation from a top-right hand corner is not intuitive.
Maximize User Experience
There are no additional fees/subscriptions to use this Workday functionality - it's all delivered. It's also a myth that this is going to be super time-consuming to setup and manage. It's well worth it to reduce the number of questions and make it as easy as possible for registration.Â
Some see user experience as a "nice to have." At Legato we see it as essential to the success of any technology implementation. The fact that Workday makes it so easy to build an intuitive user experience with just a little bit more investment is a powerful tool of the system.
